Nepal boasts a rich educational history dating back to ancient times. Formal education began during the Lichchhavi period (300-600 CE) with the establishment of monasteries where students received instruction in subjects such as Buddhist philosophy, Sanskrit, and grammar.
In the 19th century, the Rana regime introduced modern education in Nepal with the founding of Durbar High School in 1854 BS (1798 AD). After being relocated to a new building in Rani Pokhari, the school was renamed Bhanu Madhyamik Vidyalaya. Later, Prime Minister Bir Shumsher opened Durbar High School to the general public. In 1974 BS (1918 AD), Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher established Tri-Chandra College as Nepal’s first higher learning institute.
The universities in Nepal play a significant role in the country’s educational development. The history of universities in Nepal dates back to 2016 BS (1959 AD) when Tribhuvan University was established to provide higher education to Nepalese students. Since then, several other universities, like Kathmandu University, Pokhara University, and Purbanchal University, have been established.

The Tribhuvan University (TU)
Tribhuvan University was incorporated in 2013 BS (1956 AD) but It was established three years later, in 2016 BS (1959 AD). TU was the first and only university in Nepal at the time of its establishment. The university is in Kirtipur, a town five kilometers away from Kathmandu city center, and covers an area of 154.77 hectares of land.
After the democratic movement of 2062 BS, the Prime Minister of Nepal became the Chancellor of the University, and the Minister of Education became the Pro-Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor is the university’s Chief Executive, while academic programs are headed by the Rector, and financial management and administration are regulated by the Registrar, all under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor.
Tribhuvan University provides a broad range of academic programs through its five institutes and four faculties. A total of 40 central departments, 62 constituent campuses, and 1062 affiliated colleges operate under TU’s umbrella. There are also four research centers within the university. It provides a wide range of courses for students at different levels.
TU caters a total of 2194 courses across various academic levels, including 115 courses for technical proficiency certificates, 1079 courses for the Bachelor’s level, and 1000 courses for the Master’s level. The university also offers Ph.D. programs in technical institutes and faculties.
The Chief of the TU Planning Directorate, Professor Dr. Rhidish Kumar Pokhrel, reported a decline in enrollment rates in the Faculty of Humanities at TU for three consecutive academic sessions starting from 2069-70 BS (2013-14 AD). However, with the introduction of new disciplines, the enrollment rate has gradually improved.
In the 2071-72 BS (2015-16 AD) academic calendar, a total of 298,990 students enrolled at TU, which increased to 360,254 in 2072-73 BS (2016-17 AD). The enrollment rate has been increasing since then. Despite the establishment of multiple universities, TU remains the preferred choice for students and guardians seeking enrollment in higher education institutes, covering more than 80% of total student enrollment and providing the largest volume of higher education in the country. In Magh 2069 BS (2013-02 AD), the government of Nepal agreed to declare Tribhuvan University as the Central University.

The Mahendra Sanskrit University
Mahendra Sanskrit University is the second university in Nepal. Established in Mangsir 25 2043 BS (10 December 1986), the university is named after the late King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. The university is located 16 KM west of Ghorahi, Dang. The central office of Mahendra Sanskrit University is situated in Deukhuri, Dang, and it possesses 342 Bighas of donated land and 1336 Bighas of fertile land. The university has a distinguished faculty, with some of the most renowned scholars in the field of Sanskrit studies.
It is the only university in Nepal that specializes in the study of the Sanskrit language and literature. Mahendra Sanskrit University offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and offers five programs namely Intermediate (Uttar Madhyama), Bachelor (Shastri), Masters (Acharya), and Doctoral courses in classical and modern Sanskrit. The undergraduate program in Sanskrit is a three-year program, while the postgraduate program is two years.
Diploma and certificate courses are also available at the university in Sanskrit. It holds 12 component campuses and one associated private institution. There are a total of 1500 students enrolled. The Kathmandu University (KU)
Kathmandu University is the third university of Nepal which is a not-for-profit public institution founded in Paush 2048 BS (December 1991). Kathmandu University is located in the hilly landscape of Dhulikhel Municipality, situated around 30 kilometers to the east of Kathmandu. The university campus covers an area of 35518 square kilometers. The founder and Vice-Chancellor of Kathmandu University, Suresh Raj Sharma, holds a degree in Philosophy in Chemistry from the University of South Bank in London.

Purbanchal University
Purbanchal University is the fourth university of Nepal, Established in 2050 BS (1993 AD) in Biratnagar, is one of the most renowned and esteemed academic institutions in Nepal. The university is spread over an area of 545 hectares in Biratnagar. Respected, Prof. Ghan Shyam Lal Das is serving as the university’s vice-chancellor.
Purbanchal University offers a wide range of courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. Pokhara University
Pokhara University is the fifth university of Nepal, a non-profit autonomous institution that is funded partially by the government of Nepal and partially by revenues from its students and affiliated colleges. The concept of Pokhara University (PU) originated in 2043 BS (1986 AD), but it was officially established in 2054 BS (1997 AD) under the Pokhara University Act of 1997.
Pokhara University’s academic programs are divided into four faculties: the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Faculty of Health and Science, the Faculty of Management Studies, and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Two of the faculties Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Management Studies were established in 2054 BS (1997 AD) under the Pokhara University Act.

Pokhara University has 57 academic institutions that offer undergraduate, graduate, M.Phil, and Ph.D. programs. Bachelor’s degrees are completed over eight semesters for four years, and master’s degrees require an additional four semesters for two years. To obtain a degree in Philosophy from the University, it is mandatory to complete three semesters of study, which usually takes one and a half years. Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU)
Lumbini Development Trust proposed to establish an International Buddhist University in Lumbini during the first World Buddhist Summit held in Lumbini, held on Mangsir 14-16 2055 BS ( 30 November – 2 December, 1998). The University was officially founded in Ashwin 14 2061 BS (17 June 2004) by the Government of Nepal.
Professor Dr. Hridaya Ratna Bajracharya has been serving as Vice Chancellor of Lumbini Buddhist University while the Prime Minister of Nepal is the Chancellor of the university.
LBU offers undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate courses in various fields related to Buddhism and Himalayan studies. The university has five faculties, namely the Faculty of Buddhist Studies, Faculty of Himalayan Studies, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, and Faculty of Management. These faculties offer a total of 26 academic programs, including BA, MA, MPhil, and Ph.D. courses.
LBU has several affiliated colleges, including Lotus Buddhist Academic College in Lalitpur, Boudha Multiple Campus, Lumbini College of Buddhism and Himalayan Studies, Saugat Baudha Mahavidyalaya, Jiri Buddhist College, Theravada Buddhist Academy Kathmandu, Sowa Rigpa International College, and Lumbini International Academy of Science and Technology, in addition to the Central College in Lumbini.

Far-western University is a public university in the Kanchanpur district of Nepal. Founded in 2067 BS (August 2010). However, the academic operation started a year later, i.e 2068 BS (2011). Dr. Amma Raj Joshi is the current vice chancellor of the university and the Prime Minister of Nepal is the chancellor of the university.

Agriculture and Forestry University was established in Rampur, Chitwan, in the central part of Nepal, covering an area of over 100 hectares 2067 BS (2010 AD). Nepal Open University (NOU)

Madhesh Agricultural University (MAU)
The Madhesh Agricultural University is in Rajbiraj, Saptari Madhesh province of Nepal covering an area of 2,086 hectares. It was founded by the government of Nepal on Mangsir 27 2078 BS (13 December 2021) with the goal of quality education in the field of agriculture in the Madhesh region of Nepal. Mr. Saroj Kumar Yadav is the chancellor of the university and Dr. Baidynath Mahato is the vice-chancellor of the university.

Lumbini Technological University (LTU)
The Lumbini Technological University was founded by an act of the provincial Legislature on Ashar 18 2079 BS (2 July 2022), promoting technical environment, management, applied science, and tourism education in the province at undergraduate degree level and above. Mr. Binod Dhakal has been appointed as the Vice-chancellor of the university.
The University provides more than 20 courses which include a Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering, Master of Information Technology, Master of Science in Agriculture, MSc in Forestry, Master in Travel and Tourism Management, Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, Bachelor in Travel and Tourism Management, B.Sc in Forestry, Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering. The university has over 500 enrolled students and more than 30 teachers are employed at the university.
The University has been assigned the task of establishing centers of excellence in emerging technologies to train students in developing skilled manpower in the country and the state. Therefore the University aims to promote courses in regular and continuing education programs.
The newly established LTU in Nepal aims to provide global-level education and emphasize its global connections, innovation, industry relevance, entrepreneurship, social impact, and capacity-building role. The institution functions as a multicultural community with a cosmopolitan outlook toward both living and learning.

Apart from these universities, the Council of Ministers has decided to establish and operate the Shaheed Dashrath Chand National University of Health Sciences in Geta as a specialized university in health sciences. The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology will draft a bill for the university’s establishment, which will be passed by Parliament before it is established. The government has spent Rs 5 billion 40 crores on construction so far. The construction of a 600-bed hospital and medical college in Geta has been stalled for two years, but the government has allocated a budget of 450 crores for its operation this fiscal year. Although the hospital is not operational yet the director for it is appointed already.
